The Mill began in the mind of Genevieve, and flourished in the supporting hands of Urban Dream Brokerage. Having completed a Master of Textile Design at Massey University, Genevieve had a burning passion to share her knowledge with the community of Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Initially the idea was for an 8-shaft table loom to be set up on its own in a small space, offering an invitation to learn how simple weaving could be, to anyone who took up the task. After reaching out to other local weavers, a group of six textile artists and community space holders came together around the loom. Each brought their own area of expertise and passion to the Micro Mill. What followed was two months of connection, learning, ideation, and creation, as a community.
The goal of the first activation was to make textile processes accessible to the public. To create space for learning and discussion around textile waste, the textile and fashion industries, and other interconnected issues.
The Facilitators

In the second month of being open the Micro Mill offered ticketed workshops. These included raranga, macrame, tapestry weaving with weeds, and chain maille. The workshops were a great success. These moments of connection and learning are so valuable as catalysts for community, which is why we continue to offer workshops with as much accessibility as possible.
