Armenian Needlelace

Join guest artist Lo for an exploration of Armenian craft and culture as we transform a simple needle and thread into beautiful lace! During the workshop, you'll learn the basic techniques of needlelace and spend some time playing with the form. You'll have time to complete 2-3 small (~5cm) pieces, either from a pre-set pattern or from your own imagination, while also learning more about Armenian history and symbols that can be looped and knotted into the lace. This workshop is open to all, regardless of cultural background or crafting experience. All materials will be provided.

Lo is an Armenian-American immigrant to Aotearoa and a lifelong crafter. From crochet to jewelry making to beading, their work is a multimedia meditation on whakapapa and the natural world. They are excited to share the joys of Armenian needlelace, an ancient craft that is as intricate and resilient as the Armenian women who have passed it down through the generations. This workshop is also part of a larger series of programming celebrating Armenian culture and bringing attention to the 100+ year history of the Armenian genocide and ongoing ethnic cleansing, hosted by Remember the Armenians.
