Drop Spindle Spinning
Sunday 1st February
1pm - 3pm
Hataitai Community Centre, 157 Hataitai Road
A Sunday afternoon of luscious, meditative, woolly goodness as we learn how to use drop spindles to make our own yarn from local wool. Mo will walk through the basics of how to select wool, draft for spinning, and use a drop spindle to make singles and plied yarn. All materials supplied with the option to purchase a drop spindle to take home.
Rag Rug Braiding
Rug Braiding will be back in 2026! Sign up to our newsletter, follow us on instagram, or check back here soon!
We’ll touch on the techniques used to make single braid sewn rugs, but focus on learning 4-stranded braiding techniques, learning how to find and process materials and how to build your experimentation with natural dyes, varied shapes, or non-fabric materials. Basic fabric for the workshop is provided - but you are highly encouraged to bring fabric that is meaningful to you in color or origin. Think old but clean bedsheets/tablecloths, fabric in the colors of your home spaces, or even clothing desiring a new life.
Take the Art of Your Ancestors and Make it Your Own
This discussion workshop will be back in 2026! Sign up to our newsletter, follow us on instagram, or check back here soon!
A sampling of things we will be getting curious about:
What does it look like to bring ancestral values/materials/techniques into what I create?
How can I process my journey of reflection/healing with these ideas through creative practice?
These workshops are brought to us by Monica (Mo)
Monica/Mo is an interdisciplinary folk artist passionate about gathering to create things alongside each other. They believe in shared craft that builds communities and brings life to spaces. Mo is an immigrant to Aotearoa from Minowaking, Turtle Island (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA) with ancestors from eastern Europe. Their workshops draw on connecting with these identities through craft, in ways that honour the tikanga and whenua of Aotearoa. Through their practice and workshops Mo cultivates joy, connection and care, empowering us to face uncertain futures.
